 Band at Phelps

Phelps offers Advanced Band and Beginning Band classes during the school day. As part of band classes, students learn the fundamentals of performing on at least one instrument, singing proficiency, music literacy, dynamics, articulation, phrasing, improvisation, composition and play in large and small ensembles. Students enrolled in band classes participate in either the Beginning Band or Advanced Band based on their experience level, and all students can participate in the Phelps Panther Marching Band.

Schedule

Marching Band meets Mondays and Wednesdays after school (3:45pm-5:00pm) in addition to the Concert Band class. During this time, we rehearse marching skills and musicianship.

Get the class!

All DCPS students are required to complete 0.5 credits of music (half a year) to receive a high school diploma. Concert band classes satisfy 1.0 credit and satisfy the graduation requirement each year. Many students participate in band at Phelps for three or four years, earning up to four full credits!

Counselors work with students to provide a schedule that allows them to complete their major coursework and participate in band without having to take evening or summer classes.

Joining Band

Do I need to provide my own instrument?

No. Phelps provides an instrument for each student that needs one. In the case of large instruments, like tubas and trombones, Phelps provides a second instrument for home so students do not have to bring the instrument back and forth.

Do I already need to know how to play an instrument or read music?

No. Many students enroll in beginning band to learn to play an instrument for the first time.
